UK: Airshow crash death toll rises to 11

LONDON

The death toll in the tragedy that hit Shoreham Airshow has likely risen to 11, police have said Sunday.

Assistant constable Steve Barry from Sussex police said 11 people were “highly likely” to have died in Saturday’s jet crash on vehicles on the A27 motorway. The Hunter Hawker type vintage jet was performing a show flight.

Barry added that full formal identification of bodies was still to come.

Meanwhile, media reports named some of the victims and identified the pilot of the jet as Andy Hill. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Amateur footage that went viral shortly after the crash showed the jet appeared too low after attempting a loop-to-loop maneuver.

The death toll had reached seven after the crash on Saturday afternoon. Emergency services added there were 14 injured.

Assistant constable Barry said that the search for bodies at the scene of the crash would continue.

Sussex police also made an appeal to witnesses of the accident on their official twitter account and asked people not to post every piece of footage online.

“Some of this material could be very distressing for the families and loved ones of the victims, so we are asking for anyone with footage to please consider their thoughts and feelings before posting,” the statement said.

Police also said the closure of A27 motorway would likely continue for the rest of the weekend.
