NEW YORK

The U.K is drafting a UN Security Council resolution to commemorate the thousands of Bosnian Muslims who were killed during 1995's Srebrenica massacre, sources said Friday.

Around 8,000 Bosnian boys and men were slayed in July 1995 by Serbian forces in eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica in the worst episode of mass murder in Europe since the Second World War.

"The U.K. is leading on the drafting of a UN Security Council resolution to mark the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica," said Britain's UN mission in a statement to Anadolu Agency.

"The exact content is still under discussion with partners, but we expect that it will commemorate the victims of the genocide at Srebrenica, and those who suffered on all sides in the war," the statement said.

The U.K. draft also aims to "encourage further steps towards reconciliation and a brighter future for Bosnia and Herzegovina," the statement added.

"This is also an occasion for the international community to reflect on the lessons learned from the one of the darkest moments in UN history and reaffirm our determination to prevent genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.”

The killings occurred after the Bosnian Serb army attacked a UN "safe area", despite the presence of Dutch troops tasked with acting as UN peacekeepers.

The deaths were officially recognized by the International Court of Justice as genocide in 2007.

The draft text, which Britain's UN office says has not been circulated, is expected to be submitted to the Security Council early July.
