KIEV, Ukraine
Three firefighters and one site worker were killed in a huge fire at a fuel storage facility located near the capital Kiev, said Ukraine's Interior Ministry spokesman on Tuesday.
"The rescue teams found the bodies of the three firefighters, who went missing while extinguishing the fire overnight," said Artem Shevchenko.
Shevchenko said the firefighters were found an area close to the storage and a total of 14 people were injured in the fire, which later triggered an explosion.
Ukrainian authorities evacuated people from the nearest villages due to security concerns as efforts continued to extinguish the fire.
In addition, weapons and ammunition in a military base close to the scene were transferred to a safer place against a potential threat by the fire.
Ukraine's National Guard troops and additional teams from nearby cities were deployed to the area to back the firefighters to put out the fire.
