12,000 North Korean soldiers, including high-ranking officers, have joined Russian forces in conflict zone, say Ukrainian intelligence officials

Ukraine says North Korean troops have been deployed to Russia's Kursk region

KYIV, Ukraine 

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense (GUR) said North Korean military units have been deployed to Russia’s Kursk region.

In a written statement, GUR said the units, trained in Russia, have joined the war against Ukraine.

It said around 12,000 soldiers from North Korea were sent to Russia, including 500 officers and three generals, according to Ukrainian intelligence officials.

The statement also noted that the soldiers are equipped with ammunition, bedding, winter clothing, footwear and hygiene supplies.
