NEW YORK
Two Tanzanian peacekeepers have been killed in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after their convoy was ambushed by suspected Ugandan rebels, the UN has said.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack on Tuesday, which left 13 peacekeepers wounded and four missing.
The patrol came under fire in the town of Beni in the North Kivu region where government forces are battling the Ugandan rebel group Allied Democratic Forces, or ADF, which has maintained a presence in the eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The group, designated a terrorist organization by the UN Security Council, opposes Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
Ban "condemns in the strongest terms the continuing atrocities perpetrated by the ADF against defenseless civilians in the Beni area," the UN spokesperson's office said.
The attack came a day after a UN helicopter was fired upon by a group of unidentified gunmen in Beni.
Eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo have been riven by conflict as rebel groups have deepened instability as they exploit the country's mineral resources.
