NEW YORK
A 23-year-old American Muslim man has been indicted in the state of Ohio over alleged plans to commit an act of terrorism in the U.S., the Department of Justice said Thursday.
Abdirahman Sheikh Mohamud was allegedly trained by a terrorist group in Syria and was instructed by a cleric to return to the U.S. and carry out a terrorist act, the department said in a written statement.
He faces charges of attempting to provide material support to al-Nusra terrorist group and making false statements. He had initially been arrested in February.
"Identifying and neutralizing the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters who return to the United States is one of the National Security Division’s highest priorities," Assistant Attorney General John Carlin said.
According to prosecutors, Mohamud, a naturalized citizen, left the U.S. in April 2014 "for the purpose of training and fighting with terrorists in Syria."
The indictment alleges that he purchased a one-way ticket to Greece, but did not board his connecting flight to Athens during his layover in Turkey, and instead travelled to Syria.
Upon his return to the U.S., he talked about "going to a military base in Texas and kill three or four American soldiers execution style," the indictment said.
On April 10, a federal court in Kansas charged a 20-year-old with allegedly plotting a suicide attack on a military base on behalf of Daesh.
