KUWAIT CITY
Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah on Tuesday said that the conference to be organized on Wednesday was a humanitarian mission and said "We aim to collect 1.5 billion USD of assistance for millions of Syrians who have been affected by the crisis in their country."
Al- Sabah gave information about the international aid conference which will be held by the initiatives of United Nations in Kuwait.
Stating that 18 organizations as well as UN institutions, aid organizations such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent and 17 NGOs would be participating, Al-Sabah said, "We aim to collect 1.5 billion USD of assistance for millions of Syrian refugees."
Mentioning that the UN was making moves to resolve the issue, Al-Sabah stated that UN and Arab League's Special Envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi was expected to give briefing at the conference and said, "We hope that the UN Security Council's attitude meets the expectations of those who want peace."
Upon a question on how the collected aid would be distributed to the Syrians in need, Al-Sabah said that it was in the initiative of that country.
Charity groups vow $182 million in humanitarian aid
Charity groups pledged millions of dollars in a conference on Tuesday in Kuwait for civil war-stricken Syrians.
A group of 77 Kuwaiti and international charity funds gathered in the conference hosted by Kuwait-based International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) pledged $182 million in humanitarian aid for Syrians.
IICO President Abdullah Al-Matouq said the donations would be allocated for food, health services and shelter for internally-displaced Syrians as well as Syrian refugees who had fled violence to neighboring countries.
