LAGOS, Nigeria

At least 22 students were killed in a road mishap in Nigeria's northwestern Kano state‎ on Tuesday, police said.

"A bus carrying school students collided with a truck that resulted in the deaths of 22 students, who were going on excursion," Kano police spokesman Musa Magaji Majiya told Anadolu Agency by phone.

He said some other persons also sustained injuries in the accident.

Majiya quoted eyewitnesses as saying that both vehicles were dodging a pothole on the road when they collided.

Locals said the incident has raised tension in the area but the police spokesman said security operatives were already deployed to maintain order.

Road mishaps are routine on Nigerian roads, blamed on poor road infrastructure and excessive speed by drivers.
