WASHINGTON

The State Department requested Tuesday that every nation join the US in condemning an Iranian ballistic missile attack against Israel.

"We will continue to stand with the people of Israel at this critical moment," spokesman Matthew Miller said at a news conference.

Miller said the US is not aware of any damage to American facilities, noting that the State Department issued an order earlier for personnel in Israel to shelter at home.

"We have full accountability for our own personnel. We're not aware of any of any civilian casualties inside Israel there, let alone an American citizen casualty," he said.

Miller said reports are "false" that claim Iran gave the US warning about the attack.

"We had no warning from the government of Iran that they were going to launch such an attack," said the spokesman.

He reiterated that Israel has the right to defend itself and "there must be consequences for Iran for this attack".

"I'm not going to get into what those consequences are today, but there are things on which we will be coordinating with our Israeli counterparts," he said. "And I think in the immediate aftermath of this attack, we are going to coordinate with them on what any response might be.”

Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel amid heightened tensions between the two regional arch-rivals.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRCG) said the attack was in response to the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and IRGC commander Abbas Nilforoshan.
