China on Wednesday reiterated its call against renewed conflict between the United States and Iran, warning that escalating tensions could have far-reaching consequences for the global economy.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the situation in the Middle East has already disrupted global energy markets, leading to supply shortages and economic strain for many countries.
“The key is to take all efforts to avoid the reignition of the flames of war,” Lin told reporters in Beijing, warning that continued instability could trigger broader regional turmoil and undermine global economic development.
He stressed that the fundamental solution lies in preventing further escalation and promoting a comprehensive and long-term ceasefire.
China also pledged to remain diplomatically engaged, maintaining communication with all parties while working to safeguard stable international industrial and supply chains.
The US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting Tehran to respond with strikes on what it described as US interests across the region, many of them in Gulf countries.
A ceasefire was announced on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, followed by talks hosted in Islamabad on April 11-12, but the negotiations ended without an agreement.
US President Donald Trump later said the truce had been extended at Pakistan’s request pending a proposal from Tehran.
He signaled Monday that he was unlikely to accept Iran’s latest proposal to end the war after Tehran proposed a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while leaving questions about its nuclear program for later negotiations.
