On the day first of its annual business calendar, Japan saw disruption in services of landline-based telephone and Internet, the country’s service provider said.

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) said in a statement the Internet and landline telephone services experienced disruptions Monday across Japan.

The statement said the telephone and Internet communication was “interrupted due to a failure of communication equipment.”

Japan’s fiscal year begins on April 1 every year.

“There was a situation where the service could not be used, but now it has been restored and the service can be used,” said the NTT statement.

“We will continue to monitor the communication service status,” the statement added.

According to local media reports, customers across the country “were temporarily unable to make emergency calls.”
