Trading was brought to a halt on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday when the market was hit by a “technical issue”, an exchange official said.
The exchange was shut at 11:32 a.m. local time (1532GMT).
All open orders for trades were cancelled, meaning offers to trade at a given price were annulled.
"We're currently experiencing a technical issue that we’re working to resolve as quickly as possible,” a spokeswoman said in a statement. "We will be providing further updates as soon as we can and are doing our utmost to produce a swift resolution… and ensure a timely and orderly market re-open."
