U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew on Wednesday called on Greece's European creditors to allow the country to restructure its debt.
Speaking at a Brookings Institution event in Washington D.C., Lew said Greece and its creditors should reach an agreement that keeps the eurozone intact.
“I continue to believe that it is in the best interest of all parties to find a resolution,” Lew said. “Greece needs a path towards a sustainable debt path.”
Greece has until Sunday to reach an agreement with the Eurogroup on a new bailout plan. On Wednesday, the Greek government formally requested a new bailout from the European Stability Mechanism, which will be reviewed on Thursday by eurozone finance ministers.
