US stock market kicks off new week mixed

ISTANBUL

Major US stock exchanges had a mixed start to the new week on Monday, following a rally on Friday fueled by optimism surrounding the debt limit bill and stronger-than-expected job figures.

The Dow Jones fell 77 points, or 0.23%, to 33,684 at 10.19 am EDT. The blue-chip index posted a gain of 2% last week.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, was flat at 4,282. Last week, the index recorded a 1.8% increase.

The Nasdaq rose five points, or 0.05%, to reach 13,246 at the time. The tech-heavy index recorded a 2% gain last week.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 4% to 15.19. The 10-year US Treasury yield, meanwhile, shed 0.35% to 3.671%.

The dollar index decreased 0.04% to 103.97, while the euro rose 0.05% to $1.0715 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold rising 0.5% to $1,956 per ounce but silver trimming 0.5% to $23.51.

Oil prices increased more than 1%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $76.95 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $72.48.
