German authorities said on Friday that police have arrested a 60-year-old man suspected of shooting dead two district officials during a routine firearms inspection in Bavaria.
Public broadcaster BR reported that the suspect, a German national, was slightly wounded in the leg by police gunfire when officers stormed the house where he had barricaded himself. He admitted firing the fatal shots, a police spokesman said.
The shooting took place on Thursday afternoon in Berngau, a town of about 2,600 people in southern Germany. The two victims, a 45-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman, worked for the Neumarkt district administration.
BR said the arrest took place at about 2.30 am Friday (12:30 a.m. GMT), after specialist officers spent hours trying to persuade the man to surrender. When he refused, officers forced their way in. He was wounded in the leg and taken for treatment. The broadcaster said Regensburg criminal police would question him after his treatment.
