LONDON
Muslims living in Britain were subjected to 115 verbal and physical attacks in the week following the Paris bombings and shootings that killed 130 people, according to figures reported in local media.
The Independent newspaper cited figures from Tell MAMA, a group that monitors anti-Muslim attacks, to report a 300 percent rise in Islamophobic attacks.
Women aged 14 to 45 dressed in Islamic clothing such as the hijab were the main targets, the newspaper said.
The Tell MAMA report said many of the incidents occurred on public transport. Eight of the victims had children with them when they were attacked.
The Independent said the actual number of incidents is likely to be higher due to underreporting to police.
"Many of the victims have suggested that no one came to their assistance or even consoled them, meaning that they felt victimized, embarrassed, alone and angry about what had taken place against them," the newspaper quoted the Tell MAMA report as saying.
Following the Nov. 13 Paris attacks, the Muslim Council of Britain placed a notice in the British media condemning the attacks "unreservedly".
