Turkish Armed Forces destroyed shelters and gun emplacements belonging to PKK terrorists in northern Iraq as part of an operation targeting the terror group, the military said on Sunday.

According to the Turkish General Staff, the warplanes destroyed shelters and gun emplacements in the Zap region on Saturday, which were being used by terrorists, who were reportedly preparing to attack Turkish military posts and bases.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU -- resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015.

Since then, it has been responsible for the deaths of more than 1,200 Turkish security personnel and civilians, including a number of women and children.
