Mamnoon Hussain has been elected the twelfth President of Pakistan, unofficial election results show.
The elections held in the federal assembly, senate and state assemblies on Tuesday saw Hussain, a senior member of the ruling Muslim League-N (PLMN), beat his only opponent Wajihuddin Ahmed, nominated by the third largest party of cricket legend Imran Khan, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
Official results are expected to be announced later in the day.
Following his victory, Hussain quit his post in PLMN. Security measures have been enhanced around Hussain's residence in Karachi, the largest metropolitan center of Pakistan.
The new president will be sworn in on September 9 and will serve for five years. Sitting President Asif Ali Zardari will remain in office till Hussain's inauguration.
