UNITED NATIONS
United Nations Secretary General has made an appeal to Egypt's security forces in order for them to fulfil their duty of protecting civilian demonstrators from harm and preventing pro- and anti-Morsi groups from clashing with each other.
Egypt's ousted leader Mohamed Morsi is believed to be kept under house arrest in capital Cairo.
A statement from the UN said Ban was watching the developments in the North African nation with increasing concern. The secretary general was particularly troubled by restrictions on freedom of expression and press, it said.
The statement cited clashes between protesters, the killings of demonstrators, as well as "horrible" instances of sexual harassment.
Ban called on the Egyptian people to use their freedom of assembly in a peaceful manner. The smooth transfer of power to a civilian administration hinges upon working together within the bounds of constitutional order, Ban said.
