Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed on Wednesday the situation in Ukraine with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, a Kremlin statement said.

The discussion "focused on the problems of the ongoing negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian representatives."

According to the readout, Putin "outlined a number of considerations in the context of the principled positions of the Russian Federation in these negotiations."

Russia sent troops into Ukraine in what it called a “special military operation” on Feb. 24. The war has met international outrage and Western countries have implemented tough financial sanctions on Moscow.

Kyiv and Moscow have held several rounds of talks since then, with the status of Crimea, fate of breakaway Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and Ukraine's attempt to join NATO topping the agenda.
