ANKARA
Swiss tennis player Roger Federer has been eliminated from the Australian Open by Italian Andreas Seppi in four sets on Friday.
The Association of Tennis Professionals, or ATP, number two ranked tennis player in the world was ousted in the third round of the Melbourne tournament Seppi, ranked 46th.
Seppi won the first two sets 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). The 33-year-old four-time Australian Open champion managed to claim the third set, 6-4, but ultimately lost the fourth, 7-5 in the tie-break.
Meanwhile, in the women's section, Russian Maria Sharapova breezed past her Kazakh opponent Zarina Diyas in two sets to advance to the fourth round.
The Australian Open is the first of the four major Grand Slam tournaments of the year.
