ANKARA
The Turkish prime minister has telephoned Greece's newly sworn-in Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to congratulate him for his party’s victory in Sunday's elections and the formation of a new coalition government.
"I've just called and congratulated the new Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras," Ahmet Davutoglu wrote Monday on his official Twitter account.
Earlier, the 40-year-old leader of the left-wing Syriza Party took the oath of office before President Karolos Papoulias in Athens, making him the youngest Prime Minister in the country’s history.
The ceremony came hours after the right-wing Independent Greeks party agreed to form a coalition government with the winners of Greece's national elections.
Davutoglu also said he hoped that the new term would be beneficial both for Greek citizens and for the relations between Greece and Turkey.
The Turkish premier added that he wished to welcome and meet Tsipras in Ankara soon.
Syriza won 36.3 percent of the vote in Sunday's parliamentary elections, claiming a projected 149 seats in the 300-seat parliament - two short of an absolute majority needed to form a single-party government.
