BEIRUT

The leader of the Qaeda-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades Majid al-Majid died in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Saturday, only a few days after he was arrested by the Lebanese authorities, a Lebanese security source said.
The source added that al-Majid had been admitted to a military hospital to receive treatment after suffering kidney problems.
He was put on a medical ventilator for a while before his death, the source said.
Last week, Lebanon's LBC television channel reported that military intelligence had arrested Saudi-born al-Majid in Beirut last month.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigades had claimed responsibility for November's twin bombings that targeted the Iranian embassy in Beirut and killed at least 23 people, including the Iranian cultural attaché.
The group has vowed more attacks until Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah withdraws its fighters from Syria and Abdullah Azzam Brigades fighters are released from Lebanese jails.
Military involvement by Hezbollah and Iran in the ongoing Syria conflict has drawn condemnation from Sunni-Muslim quarters both inside and outside Lebanon.
