KABUL
Unknown armed men abducted a foreign national on Monday in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul, sources said.
An Afghan police official speaking on the condition of anonymity said the individual was a German woman working for the German Society for International Development (GIZ).
“They kidnapped her immediately after she left her office or guesthouse in the area around 9 a.m.”, the official said.
Declining to comment on the incident, a police officer at the scene told reporters: “We are investigating the case; we will let you know by the time we are done.”
A German employee of GIZ was freed in April this year after spending 40 days in Taliban custody in northern Kunduz province. He had been kidnapped by Taliban militants en route from Kunduz to Balkh province.
The German Foreign Ministry had announced that he had managed to escape from Taliban custody. Observers believe that most of the kidnappings are carried out for ransom.
Taliban militants and criminal gangs have recently increased their attacks on international aid workers.
