BAGHDAD
The Turkish Red Crescent will donate 1,000 housing units to Turkmen refugees in southern Iraq, the organization’s president announced Tuesday in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
Ahmet Lutfi Akar and his delegation met with Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq, revealing that Turkey is ready to donate 1,000 of the 21-square meter units if logistical support is provided, a campsite is determined and infrastructure is set up.
Mutlaq said the proposals would be evaluated by Iraqi officials.
The Turkish humanitarian agency also recently sent 200 truckloads of aid to Iraq.
Thousands of Turkmen families have fled to southern Iraq after armed groups affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant captured large swathes of land in Iraq and Syria, declared a cross-border Islamic caliphate.
Established 146 years ago, the Turkish Red Crescent is one of the oldest humanitarian agencies in the world.
