RIYADH
A U.S. national was shot dead and a second was injured in a Tuesday attack in Saudi capital Riyadh, a police spokesman has said.
The two Americans came under fire while fueling their car in eastern Riyadh, the spokesman said in a statement cited by Saudi's official news agency.
The attacker was injured and arrested following a shootout with security forces, the spokesman said.
The U.S. State Department, for its part, said that the two Americans were security contractors.
Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that the two were working for Vinnell Arabia, a U.S. defense contractor supporting Saudi National Guard military programs in Riyadh.
Tuesday's attack came three days after Washington warned U.S. nationals of possible attacks over an ongoing military campaign against the militant Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.
Saudi Arabia has joined a U.S.-led campaign to attack targets of ISIL, which has recently seized vast swathes of territory in both Iraq and Syria.
