SALADIN, Iraq
Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, vice president of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, was killed Friday by security forces in Saladin province, a government official said.
Saladin Governor Raed Ibrahim al-Jabouri said that al-Douri was killed after Iraqi security forces launched a preemptive military operation in Hemrin area east of Tikrit.
The governor posted pictures of a dead man who looks like al-Douri on his official Facebook page. The authenticity of the photos could not be independently verified.
Al-Douri was the second-most senior figure in Saddam Hussein’s regime and had been wanted by the U.S.
