Greek Cypriot serial killer gets life plus imprisonment
Former Greek Cypriot army officer was convicted of killing 5 migrant women, 2 children
LEFKOSA, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
A Greek Cypriot serial killer was handed seven life sentences on Monday in the Greek Cypriot administration for killing seven people, according to Turkish Agency Cyprus (TAK).
TAK reported that Nikos Metaxas, a former Greek Cypriot army officer, was convicted for killing five migrant women of Filipino, Nepalese and Romanian descent and their two children.
One of the killed children was six years old and the other eight, both of them girls.
Metaxas confessed that he killed seven people during the court hearing.
"I committed disgusting crimes. I do not have clear answers in my mind for why and how I committed these crimes," he told the court.
The victims were migrant women who came to the Greek Cypriot administration for work.
Greek Cypriot police were previously accused of disregarding the murder case because its victims were migrants.
The administration's police chief was subsequently discharged and the minister of justice forced to resign in the face of the backlash.
