Libya's most senior diplomatic envoy to Turkey said that an attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi which killed US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and four other Americans might be linked to the extradition of Abdullah Al-Senussi, former Libyan head of the military intelligence, to Tripoli.
"The Libyan Interior Ministry focuses on the possibility that the attack was a response to al-Sennusi's extradition to Libya," Abdurrezzak Mukhtar told the Anadolu Agency.
Mukhtar said the identities of the assailants were not immediately known but they could be affiliated with a group loyal to the ousted Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi.
"The attack aims at destabilizing Libya. Foreign diplomats haven't been targeted in such an aggression before in our country. I hope this will not affect relations between Libya and the United States," Mukhtar said.
