Defending champ Jannik Sinner advances to quarterfinals at Australian Open

ISTANBUL 

In the first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the season, the Australian Open, Italian Jannik Sinner, the men's singles world No. 1, advanced to the quarterfinals.

Defending champion Sinner defeated on Monday Danish Holger Rune (seeded 13) 3-1 in a match that lasted three hours and 13 minutes, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2 at Rod Laver Arena.

Italian player Lorenzo Sonego defeated American Learner Tien 3-1 (6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1), advancing to the quarterfinals of a grand slam tournament for the first time in his career.

In the quarterfinals, Sinner will face the Alex Michelsen-Alex de Minaur match winner, while Sonego will face the Gael Monfils-Ben Shelton clash winner.

Keys eliminates Rybakina

In women's singles, American Madison Keys defeated 2022 Wimbledon champion Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina with the sets of 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to secure her spot in the quarterfinals.

Ukraine's Elina Svitolina also claimed victory, beating Russian Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets, setting up a quarterfinal clash with Keys.
