Latvia successfully adopted the Euro, a European Union (EU) Commission statement said on Friday, announcing that the Euro and Latvia's national currency (Lat) would both be used for a two week transition period.
As of January 2, 30 percent of payments in Latvia were done with Euros and more than 94 percent of customers were given change in Euros.
Research by the Commission revealed that two days before the country adopted the Euro, 52 percent of Latvians had Euro banknotes and 64 percent had Euro coins.
Noting the smooth passage into using Euro in cash machines, the Commission underlined the transition had been successful due to careful preliminary preparations.
Latvia adopted the Euro as its sole currency on January 1, becoming the 18th EU country to join Eurozone.
