Israeli authorities said Wednesday that they had arrested a Palestinian citizen of Israel for allegedly trying to join the Daesh terrorist group in Syria.

Ofir Gendelman, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, tweeted that -- according to Israel’s Shin Bet intelligence agency -- Ibrahim Aghbaria had been arrested at Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport while preparing to embark on a flight to Syria.

Israel Radio reported that Aghbaria, a 23-year-old from the Arab town of Umm al-Fahm, had been deported from Turkey after being detained near the Syrian border two weeks ago.

According to Israeli media reports, around 40 Palestinians citizens of Israel are believed to have joined Daesh in Syria.
