The head of Egypt's railway department resigned late Sunday, according to the transportation ministry.

The resignation of Medhat Shousha was accepted by the country’s transportation minister, the ministry said in a statement.

It came days after a two-train collision Friday in the coastal city of Alexandria that killed 42 people and injured 133 others.

Egypt has seen several rail accidents in recent years, due largely to what critics describe as mismanagement and an antiquated infrastructure.
