Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday voiced his country’s readiness to cooperate with the UN in Afghanistan “in all fields”, Iran’s official IRNA news agency has reported.
“Iran has spared no effort promoting the stability of Afghanistan,” Zarif reportedly said at a meeting with Tadamichi Yamamoto, a special envoy for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in Tehran.
According to IRNA, Zarif stressed the need for stepped-up cooperation between Tehran and Kabul “both politically and economically and in terms of countering the threat posed by the Daesh terrorist group”.
Yamamoto, for his part, reportedly briefed the Iranian foreign minister on the security situation in neighboring Afghanistan, stressing the need to support the Afghan peace process “with a view to achieving peace and security there”.
