JERUSALEM (AA) - Israel withdrew its ambassador to Egypt some three months ago -- without publicly announcing the move -- due to a potential security threat, Israel Radio reported late Tuesday.

Ambassador David Govrin was reportedly summoned back to Jerusalem late last year -- as were the rest of the embassy staff -- due to security concerns.

Govrin assumed his diplomatic posting in Cairo last year amid warming relations between Egypt and Israel.

In 2011, following Egypt’s Jan. 25 uprising, the Israeli embassy in Cairo was attacked by protesters, with embassy staff locking themselves in a secure room until they were rescued by Egyptian troops.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry, for its part, has declined to comment on the recent withdrawal of the ambassador.
