RAMALLAH, Palestine

A Palestinian man was shot dead Tuesday for allegedly trying to attack a group of Israeli soldiers in Israeli-occupied West Bank, according to the Israeli army.

The military said in a statement two soldiers were slightly injured when the Palestinian tried to run over a group of soldiers at the entrance of Beit Enoun village in the northern Hebron city.

“The Palestinian man was shot and killed at the scene, while the two soldiers were evacuated to hospital for treatment,” it said.

The Palestinian health ministry identified the slain Palestinian as Rafaat al-Herbawi, 30.

Tuesday’s killing comes amid tension across the West Bank over Israel installing metal detectors at gates of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque following a deadly shootout on Friday that left five people dead.

Since October of 2015, more than 300 Palestinians have been killed in alleged attacks on Israelis or in clashes with Israeli forces, according to Palestinian figures.

The Israeli authorities, for their part, say almost 50 Israelis have been killed in attacks carried out by Palestinians over the same period.
