At least 11 people were killed in a regime airstrike Sunday in Syria’s western Idlib province, according to local medical sources.

Regime aircraft struck a marketplace and a school in al-Dana town in northern Idlib, the sources said on condition of anonymity due to security concerns.

Most fatalities were women and children, the source said, adding that at least 40 people were also injured in the attack.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011, when the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests -- which erupted as part of the "Arab Spring" uprisings -- with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, more than 400,000 people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced across the war-battered country, according to the UN.
