Ukraine pardons detained pro-EU protestors

KIEV

Ukraine has granted amnesty to pro-European Union protestors detained during the anti-government protests which erupted after the Ukrainian government's decision to suspend the process of integration into the EU bloc.

A total of 339 parliament members out of the 367 who attended the session voted in favor of the amnesty bill, proposed to the Ukrainian Parliament by the opposition.

The bill promises that no new lawsuits will be brought against pro-EU protestors, while those detained during the protests will be released.

The anti-government protests began on November 21 when Ukrainian government suspended the preparations for signing an agreement which would strengthen cooperation with the EU.

Approximately 45 percent of Ukrainians prefer closer ties with the EU but around 30 percent want to keep historic and strong economic ties with Russia.
