Sudan's Foreign Ministry has expressed sorrow over the death of a Spanish diplomat who was found dead in his Khartoum home earlier Monday.

"Security agencies in Khartoum State have started their investigation to find the criminals as soon as possible," the ministry said in a statement.

"The Sudanese government is strictly committed to the protection of all foreign diplomats," it added.

The ministry did not, however, provide further details about the Spanish diplomat's death, an event it described in its statement as "regrettable."

Earlier Monday, Sudanese police reported that a Spanish diplomat had been stabbed to death by unidentified attackers at his home in capital Khartoum.

The diplomat, who had worked at the Spanish embassy's consular section, was found dead in his home in the upscale Garden City district by his maid, police said.

The Spanish embassy in Khartoum has yet to comment.
