Greece also tapped US ambassadors' phones

ATHENS (AA) – Former Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos has confessed that Greek intelligence services had tapped the phones of US ambassadors in Athens and Ankara in late 1990s.

In a radio interview, Pangalos said upon a question asking how he felt about the news on phone-tapping of some western leaders by US National Security Agency (NSA) that it was not a big issue and they also listened to the phone conversations of US ambassadors when he was in the foreign ministry office.

“They used to leave a pile of records (of phone conversations) on my desk every morning together with my coffee and breakfast,” Pangalos said, praising the success of EYP, Greek intelligence services.

Pangalos, one of the most colorful politicians in Athens, had retired from politics before the last elections in Greece and published an e-book called “We all binged together”, in which he dealt with the economic crisis in Greece.
