GENEVA
Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo have doubled in the last week bringing the cumulative number of cases to 62, the World Health Organization said on Thursday.
Between September 2 and 9, there have been 31 more cases of the Ebola virus disease reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the World Health Organization said in a statement on Thursday.
In the country, of those who have contracted the virus, 35 people have died so far, WHO noted.
The organization also said nine health-care workers in the country have been diagnosed with the virus and seven of them have died.
WHO reported on Tuesday that at least 2,296 people have been killed by Ebola since the outbreak was first reported in West Africa.
The tropical fever, which first appeared in 1976 in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, can be transmitted to humans from wild animals. It also reportedly spreads through contact with body fluids of infected persons or of those who have died of the disease.
