BRUSSELS (AA) - July 26, 2012 - The European Union (EU) on Thursday declared that they were concerned about the incidents of violence in Arakan state of Myanmar and called on all relevant parties to let humanitarian organizations reach the victims in the region.
The European Commission issued a statement related to the acts of violence in Myanmar and Bangladesh on Thursday.
"The Commission is following closely the situation in Western Myanmar and the Cox Bazaar district in Bangladesh where we have reports of people affected by the violence seeking safe haven and emergency medical care. We are concerned of the significant humanitarian repercussions of the events in Rakhine state. The Commission appeals to both Myanmar and Bangladesh to allow humanitarian organizations access to the victims," the statement said.
The statement also said that the European Commission allocated six million euros to help the defenseless people in Arakan and the refugees in Myanmar and neighboring countries.
A report prepared by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) of the European Commission on Myanmar's Arakan state shows the tragedy encountered by the Rohingya Muslims.
The report stressed that around 700,000 Rohingya Muslims were the victims of "racism and discrimination".
The report underlined that the Rohingya Muslims were deprived of their citizenship rights and were subject to pressure by the authorities of Myanmar.
The humanitarian crisis in Arakan necessitates urgent care and half of the population there faces serious starvation, the report said.
According to the European Commission's report, there is only one doctor per 300,000 individuals in some parts of Arakan.
Around 500,000 people have been displaced in recent years due to acts of violence in Arakan, the report also said.
