A 44-year old Bangalore-based IT (Information Technology) professional, who travelled to southern state of Kerala with colleagues for official work, has been allegedly gang-raped by two men in a upmarket resort in Poovar on the outskirts of state capital Thiruvananthapuram, reported NDTV, an English language news channel.
A senior police official told Anadolu Agency on the condition of anonymity that the two alleged rapists have been arrested today by the Kerala police.
The police official said that the two suspects were working with a pest control company that offered pest control services to the resort. The alleged incident took place five days ago on the night of Thursday November 28, 2013.
On Thursday night, the accused entered the alleged victim’s hotel room when she was not there and loosened the latch of one of the doors. They secretly entered the room again past midnight at 2.30 when the victim was fast asleep. Both the men sexually assaulted the victim who fought back and managed to snatch a necklace of beads worn by one of the accused.
The police sources told AA that it was the necklace which helped them track the two offenders from the photographs of employees supplied by the resort.
According to the police, the two men reportedly have nail marks as the alleged victim struggled and scratched them.
The Kerala Women’s Commission, a government body, said that they are concerned about the safety of women given the poor security arrangements at beach resorts.
According to the Women’s Commission, the resort which is spread over to 15 acres, just had seven guards and no security camera.
This alleged gang-rape comes at critical time when India is gripped in a high-profile rape shock as two eminent personalities from media and judiciary, have been accused of sexual assault and sexual harassment respectively.
Tarun Tejpal, Founder and Editor-in-chief of Tehelka, an investigative weekly magazine, has been arrested for allegedly raping a 28-year old junior colleague in the elevator of a hotel in Western coastal state of Goa. The alleged sexual assault took place during a high-profile media event organized by the magazine from November 8 to 10. Hollywood actor Robert De Niro and Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan attended the media event.
AK Ganguly, a retired Supreme Court judge, has been accused of sexually harassing a law intern. The alleged victim, a woman lawyer, had written a blog post in which she accused the judge (without naming him) of sexually harassing her while she interned with him in 2012.
The Supreme Court had formed a three-member committee to investigate the charges. The committee submitted its report on November 29 in which the name of the judge was revealed.
