Turkish teen wins gold at World Taekwondo Championship
Irem Yaman beats her Spanish rival 14-4 at championship
ANKARA
A Turkish athlete won the gold medal in the women’s 62 kg category at the World Taekwondo Championship after beating her Spanish rival Calvo Gomez in the final game.
Irem Yaman defeated her opponent 14-4 at the championship that was held in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, an event that saw the participation of 1,200 athletes from 100 countries.
The 18-year-old contestant beat her Belarusian rival Victoria Belanouskaya in the semi-final 9-0.
Turkey has won two golds, one silver and one bronze in the championship.
The second gold went to Servet Tazegul, who competed in the men’s 68-kilogram division and won a gold medal, beating Russian Alexey Denisenko 10-7 in the final.
