Famous Turkish historian Halil Inalcik dies at age 100

ANKARA

World-renowned Turkish historian Halil Inalcik died in Ankara on Monday at the age of 100.

Commemoration ceremonies will be held at Ankara and Bilkent Universities on Wednesday. 

The burial will take place in Istanbul following the noon prayers in Karacaahmet Mosque on Thursday.

Inalcik was born in Istanbul in 1916. He studied modern history at Ankara University’s Faculty of Language, History and Geography, where he also earned his PhD. 

He taught Ottoman history at Chicago University until 1993.

Inalcik was later invited to join the faculty of Ankara’s Bilkent University, where he founded its history department, and where he taught until this year. 

Inalcik wrote numerous books and articles on history.
