SAKARYA, Turkey

A Turkish court on Friday ordered the forfeiture of assets belonging to one of Turkey’s best known footballers over alleged links to the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO).

The court in the northwestern province of Sakarya ordered that all bank accounts, vehicles and other assets belonging to Hakan Sukur -- who played 112 games for Turkey, scoring 51 goals, including the World Cup’s fastest against South Korea in 2002 -- be confiscated.

An order was also issued against his father Selmet Sukur, a judicial source said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The ex-footballer, who served as a lawmaker with the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party for two years from 2011, is living in the U.S.

On Thursday, the Sakarya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant against the pair.

Sukur, 44, was known as the Bull of the Bosphorus during his career, which began at Galatasaray in 1992 and saw him win 14 major titles with the Istanbul club, including the 2000 UEFA Cup. He also played for Torino, Inter Milan, Parma and Blackburn Rovers.

He is among some 350 people being sought by the Turkish authorities over links to the July 15 coup attempt said to have been organized by U.S.-based preacher Fetullah Gulen’s supporters.

In June, proceedings began against Sukur for allegedly insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
