ANKARA

Three members of the Turkish security forces were martyred in clashes with the PKK in southeastern Turkey on Monday, according to officials.

A soldier died in hospital after being injured in an anti-terror operation in the Sur district of Diyarbakir, the region’s largest city, on Sunday, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement.

The soldier was seriously wounded during an operation against PKK terrorists at 10.25 a.m. local time (0825 GMT), the statement said.

The general staff later issued another statement saying a second soldier had succumbed to his wounds in hospital at 2.40 p.m. local time (12:40GMT) on Monday after being injured by small arms fire earlier in the day during a counter-terror operation.

In a separate incident, a special operations police officer was killed after coming under fire in Sur on Monday, police said.

All three died at Diyarbakir Military Hospital.

Sur, an ancient district of the city, has been under its latest curfew since Dec. 2. Security forces are carrying out an offensive against terrorists who have erected barriers to prevent incursions.

The PKK - considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU - resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in late July.

Since then, more than 200 members of the security forces have been martyred and over 3,100 PKK terrorists killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq, according to officials.
