A total of 969 undocumented migrants were detained on the Turkish borders as they attempted to illegally cross into Turkey, the Turkish General Staff said on Sunday.

The General Staff, on its website under the ‘Daily Activities’ section, stated that the Border Guards remanded 835 people as they attempted to enter Turkey from the Syrian border.

The Border Guards also detained one person trying to cross into Turkey from Iraq and six others as they were making the same attempt from Iran.

The statement added that 36 people trying to illegally cross the border from Greece to Turkey and 91 from Turkey to Greece were also taken into custody.

Turkey has been the main route for refugees trying to cross into Europe, especially since the beginning of the civil war in Syria.
