Kosovo upholds ban on wearing headscarf in public schools
Community members are threatening to take the Kosovar government to the European Court of Human Rights over the ban.
PRISTINA (AA) – Women will not be permitted to wear headscarves in public schools even in the future, Kosovar President Atifete Jahjaga told the media.
This decision sparked protests among devoted Muslims in Pristina, with some members of the community threatening to take the government to the European Court of Human Rights.
"It is not permitted and it will not be, because Kosovo is secular state,” Jahjaga said in an interview with Kosovar channel KTV.
The controversial ban was imposed in April, 2010.
The government forbade headscarves in public schools, stressing the constitution's portrayal of Kosovo a secular country.
The majority of Kosovo's population identifies themselves as secular Muslims, according to a recent census.
