Mastermind of 2013 Hatay attacks killed in Syria: Group
Turkish authorities blame Mihrac Ural for 2013 attacks in southern Hatay province that left more than 50 people dead
Damascus
LATAKIA, Syria
A Turkish militant responsible for a spate of attacks in Turkey has reportedly been killed in war-torn Syria.
Mihrac Ural was killed in an attack by the Ahrar al-Sham group in the Latakia countryside in the country’s northwest, group spokesman Abu Yusuf al-Muhajir told Anadolu Agency on Wednesday.
He said the group’s fighters had shelled regime forces after spotting "suspicious activities" in northern Latakia’s Nabi Yunus area.
According to the spokesman, Ural -- along with a number of Russian officers -- was killed in the attack.
Ural is the leader of the so-called "Popular Front for the Liberation of Iskenderun", a pro-regime militia that is accused of killing more than 50 people in western Syria in 2013.
The Turkish authorities blame Ural for a spate of attacks in the town of Reyhanli in Turkey’s southern Hatay province in May of 2013 that left more than 50 people dead.
